The MBBR plant is a small, compact wastewater treatment plant that works in two stages: a mechanical stage and a biological stage. It is recommended for treating wastewater from small towns and villages and leisure areas, with a population equivalent of 100 – 2000.
The biological treatment process is based on the growth and attachment of microorganisms on a carrier made of small polyethylene bio-elements. The bio-elements are kept moving by a diffuser or tube aeration system. Because the air keeps them constantly moving, the biofilters form a non-clogging, self-cleaning medium.
The activated sludge needed for the treatment process comes from the final settling of the process water and from sludge recirculation.
This treatment technology needs no added chemicals: the microorganisms that develop in the plant feed on the organic matter present in domestic wastewater.
