Activated carbon is used to remove chlorine, taste, odour, colour and insoluble organic and inorganic impurities from water. It is produced from selected grades of bituminous coal to obtain a high-density product with granules that resist hydraulic shock and abrasion. Activation is carefully controlled to obtain the largest possible internal surface area and an optimum pore size, ensuring the best possible retention of organic contaminant molecules from the water. One of the most common applications of activated carbon is removing the taste and odour from chlorinated mains water. The result is fresh, pleasant-tasting water without the characteristic smell and taste of chlorine. As an adsorbent medium, activated carbon treats water more effectively the larger the adsorption surface packed into the smallest possible volume.
The filter consists of 3 main parts: automatic valves, the filter and the filter media. The automatic valves are used as the control unit. The system backwashes automatically according to the valve's time/flow settings. Once all sediment on the filter media has been removed and flushed to the drain line, the filter returns to service.
After mechanical particles and sediment have been retained, the water enters the activated carbon filters for final treatment. Granular activated carbon is intended for treating municipal or industrial water to reduce taste, odour and colour, organic substances, chlorine and small amounts of hydrogen sulphide.
