Automatic multimedia filters consist of several layers of different grain sizes: gravel, quartz sand and anthracite. Different grain sizes are used to keep the space between layers to a minimum and maximise the sediment retention capacity. The raw water is treated as it passes down through the layers. Sediment, turbidity, suspended solids, sand, silt and manganese are retained by the electrostatic properties of the quartz and anthracite.
The filter consists of 3 main parts: the control unit, the filter and the filter media. Automatic valves are used as control units. The system backwashes automatically according to the valve's time settings. Once all sediment on the filter media has been removed and flushed to the drain line, the filter returns to service. It removes impurities that may appear in the pipework along the circuit from the water source to the consumer.
Automatic multimedia filters remove sediment and mechanical particles down to 10 microns. Larger particles are filtered out at the top of the filter media, while very fine particles are retained in the lower layers of the filter.
